Carb Withdrawl

Some of you may be finding yourselves overly tired, or cranky lately….so unfortunately this happens to your body with ridding it of processed “complex carbs” and sugars. Welcome to the stage of carb withdrawal. Yes your body is actually withdrawing, much the same as withdrawal from drugs. You have made the active decision to discontinue a substance that your body has become dependent on for its source of energy.

The good news is you can get all the carbohydrates you want from vegetables.; the macronutrient in veggies are carbs. This probably doesn’t help the cravings though for the grains that we all know and love (or at least I do). So we need to find ways to cope until our body reprograms to all these nutrient rich food sources.

1. It helps if you just don’t put yourself into the tempting situations. Empty out your pantry. I like to bring things to work, since most of my co-workers will eat anything, and that way when I go home I don’t even have the option to eat something off the list.

2. We have such an amazing source of people in the gym that are doing this challenge, have someone in your life to help keep you accountable. If your family is eating paleo with you they can help keep you in check. If you go out to eat with a friend who knows your goals they can pour water on your bread (since no one wants to eat soggy bread).

3. Drink tons of water. Its not the same feeling of fullness, but it is fullness all the same. Sometimes veggies and protein don’t seem to cut it, but making sure you are hydrated is important. Sometimes your body will tell you your hungry, when its really dehydrated, and then you will always crave something more…..usually the bad stuff. SO DRINK UP.

4. Rather then staying up late dwelling on how to convince yourself to sneak just a bite, and bite that wont even count as cheating, just get to bed. Get some good 8 hours sleep a night. A good night’s sleep will help with more then just food cravings!

5. Last resort: You can take 1000 mg of L-Glutamine (an amino acid most good health food stores) to assist with the cravings for high carb foods.

Before you know if you will be well into week number two and the worst will be behind you…..providing you stay true to yourself and build these good habits. You will feel an increase in energy, mood, and your appetite will shift and you wont crave so bad! Some people will find that you wont even remember what you are missing!

What is everyone’s approach to fruit and some dairy (full-fat yogurt, I’m talking about you) with their Paleo diet. What do you all consider in and out for you?

    NO DAIRY. end of story.

I heard there’s a party at 6pm at DCF. Noah, be ready.

Steve, I ate some cheese and it clearly didn’t agree with my body. I do use (grass-fed, super organic, pro-hippie) butter on a regular basis. Largely because it is an easy way to get extra fat in the diet.

UH OH–there is running tonight! Stephen, i’m really hoping you are planning on working out at 5!

Looking for some paleo friendly-ish restaurant recommendations. going out to eat with some friends next week, and they were gracious enough to let me choose the restaurant since they know i’m eating paleo and I’m wondering what are some spots with (multiple) good options? I immediately thought of Hill Country, but would like to have some other possibilities as well. Thanks!

I have found options at Spanish tapas places (ask about cheese or dairy), although this could ruin the whole sharing aspect if your friends order a ton of bread and cheese. I recently ate at Zengo, and they had some paleo-friendly stuff on their gluten-free menu. Greek can work, if you get grilled kabobs and salad or babaganoush. In general, many restaurants don’t seem to mind swapping veggies or salad for the starchy sides that come with an entree, or preparing a bunless sandwich.

I agree. No dairy and be super careful with the fruit …. Less is more and eat it after you workout (if you need to eat it). I personally hardly ever eat fruit …. I find it easier.

I have found some awesome coconut yogurt at whole foods that helps me get over the non-dairy aspect of Paleo. I used to be such a
Huge cheese and cream nerd, but hardly crave it anymore. Coconut milk is a great alternative!

On a positive note down 10 lbs after one week of paleo. Not really having carb cravings but getting a little bored with eggs already.
